Savita* was shocked to discover that her Urban Company ID had been blocked in February 2023 because she did not meet the monthly target of 40 clients. “My mother-in-law passed away and I took a break of one month from work. I was left without any means of income,” the 39-year-old beautician from Telangana’s Secunderabad told IndiaSpend.
Urban Company, an app-based home services platform, says it works with more than 40,000 people, called ‘partners’, across India, the United States, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and other countries who work on the gig-work model. Urban Company service professionals have to maintain a rating of 4.5. If it drops lower than 4.5, they are taken off the platform and are reinstated after retraining, IndiaSpend reported in January 2021. The professionals are given two chances for retraining.
