The crucial role of scientists was recalled by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism G. Kishan Reddy as the ‘Science Leaders Conclave 2022’ held at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology here, came to a close on Sunday. The Minister said scientists are taking the country to greater heights by being at the forefront of finding solutions to global problems.
“We have seen them come together to develop the COVID-19 vaccine. India now looks ahead at atmanirbharta in all fields. We want to emerge as a powerful, self-sufficient country. The government is committed to supporting scientific research under fundamental science, technology development, and supporting startups”,” said Mr Kishan Reddy.
He has urged research organisations across ministries and the industry to work together to develop world-class products and focus on channelising the youth power in the next 25 years.
Directors of 160 research institutes across various disciplines of science and technology participated in the conclave. Deliberations were held to identify issues relevant to India, and a roadmap proposed, ‘Science and Technology vision 2047’, for the country.
Member of NITI Aayog, V.K. Saraswat, said it was a unique meeting in which science leaders of the country came together, and without this, it is impossible to create a science and technology roadmap for development of the country.
“While India has performed well in producing new knowledge, the focus should be now on harnessing this knowledge for economic growth. The country’s science and technology infrastructure need to be restructured aligning with the desired outcomes for the country, not just the short-term outputs. The future society of India should be resilient where science and technology are available to all,” he added.
