India Has Its Own Native Chameleon Species, and Most Indians Have Never Seen One

A reptile that belongs here

The Indian chameleon (Chamaeleo zeylanicus) is not an exotic import or an escaped pet. It is a fully native species, found across peninsular India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Pakistan and Nepal. Its range covers dry deciduous forests, thorny scrublands, and agricultural edges from Maharashtra and Karnataka up through Rajasthan and into the foothills of the Western Ghats. It has been here far longer than most of the wildlife Indians associate with the word "Indian."
