Thousands of spectators gathered along the ceremonial boulevard of Rajpath Avenue in New Delhi on Friday to witness a grand parade commemorating India's 75th Republic Day. The event showcased the country's military prowess and rich cultural heritage, with French President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest.
The Republic Day celebration marks the adoption of India's Constitution on January 26, 1950, following its liberation from British colonial rule. Macron, accompanied by Indian President Draupadi Murmu, arrived at the viewing stand in a ceremonial British-era horse-drawn carriage. This marked the first time in four decades that the carriage was used, as it had been replaced by automobiles in previous parades.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing a turban in saffron and yellow, symbolizing Hindu nationalist colors, welcomed Macron at the viewing stand. The parade was broadcast live on television networks, captivating millions of viewers across the country.
India has a tradition of inviting foreign leaders as honored guests to witness the grandeur of its Republic Day parade. In previous years, leaders such as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi, former French President Francois Hollande, and former US President Barack Obama have attended. In 2018, ten Southeast Asian leaders were also present to witness the spectacle.
The parade featured an impressive display of military might, including tanks, missile systems, infantry combat vehicles, and medium-range surface-to-air missile systems. Hundreds of police and military personnel marched alongside the military equipment. Stunt performers on motorbikes, including more than 250 women, added an element of thrill to the parade.
Notably, a camel-mounted regiment with riders sporting mustaches paraded alongside a shiny brass band. Floats adorned with various themes depicted Hindu Lord Rama, India's recent moon lander mission, its indigenous aircraft carrier, light combat aircraft, helicopter, and a submarine.
French President Emmanuel Macron accepted India's invitation to be the chief guest of the parade at short notice, after US President Joe Biden could not attend due to his State of the Union address and reelection campaign. To mark the occasion, a 30-member French band and a 90-member marching group participated in the parade. Additionally, a French transport aircraft and two fighter jets from the French air force joined 54 aircraft from the Indian air force in a magnificent fly-over past the viewing stand.
Expressing his gratitude, Macron took to social media and stated, 'A great honor for France. Thank you, India,' on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Rajpath Avenue, originally constructed by India's former British rulers, has undergone redevelopment as part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of Indian independence three years ago. Renamed Kartavayapath, meaning Boulevard of Duty, the avenue now boasts sprawling lawns, canals, and rows of trees, providing a picturesque setting for this grand event.
The Republic Day parade not only showcases India's military might but also highlights the nation's rich cultural diversity and accomplishments. The event serves as a proud reminder of India's democratic values and progress since gaining independence, symbolizing the country's unity and strength as it moves forward into the future.
