Netflix has released the first look at new animated sci-fi Ray Gunn, as well as confirming its A-list voice cast. Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson will be voicing the lead characters in the upcoming film from Academy Award-winner Brad Bird.
Described by The Incredibles and Ratatouille director Bird as being 30 years in the making, Ray Gunn tells the story of private eye Raymond Gunn (Rockwell) in a sci-fi city called Metropia. Playing into its retro-futuristic setting, it follows Gunn as he's drawn into a case involving aliens, murder and a multimedia star named Venus Nova (Johansson).
From the first images, which you can see below, it looks like Blade Runner meets classic '40s thrillers, all with Bird's signature animated style. As well as the new images, it's also been confirmed that Tom Waits is joining the cast as Gunn's compatriot (and a one-eyed alien) Eyara. Very intriguing…

"Ray Gunn has been in my mind for over 30 years," Bird explained to Netflix. "The film is a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the '40s… it's Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers. I've been a fan of both of those sort of genres, and blending them together seemed fun, and a chance to play with a lot of very cinematic elements, and extreme characters."
Ray Gunn is due to debut on Netflix later this year but no release date has been confirmed yet. For more on the streaming platform, check out our round-up of the best Netflix movies to watch right now.
