Passengers were injured by falling luggage on a train that was "close to overturning". A report has found that a number of passengers were thrown from their seats and hit by luggage after the train passed over a junction at 76mph.
The train should have been doing no more than 30mph over the junction and should have then reduced its speed further to 25mph. No passengers were seriously injured in the April 2022 incident, but the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch (RAIB) has warned the "outcome could have been much worse".
The train, a Lumo, was travelling from Newcastle to London King's Cross when the incident happened at Spital Junction north of Peterborough. The train was not damaged, but a RAIB report published on Monday said it was "close to a speed that would have led to it overturning".
