Inaugural Recovery Cup to help those with addictions in Lanarkshire held at Ravenscraig

A football tournament aimed at helping those with addictions issues overcome their problems has been held at Ravenscraig.

The inaugural Recovery Cup was funded by the North Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership and was jointly organised by Phoenix Futures and the North Lanarkshire Recovery community with support from Street Soccer Scotland.

The event saw teams from across Lanarkshire and Fife play to raise awareness of issues around addiction and supporting wellbeing and was won by a side from Airdrie’s McDonald’s restaurant who also provided fruit and water on the day.

Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson, officially opened the tournament.

She said: “The Recovery Cup is about honouring the efforts of the amazing recovery organisations working to support individuals and families across Scotland.

“We were all there because we care about people facing addiction. We care about mental health and we care about ending stigma and supporting people in their wellbeing.

“It was a fantastic turnout and very well done to all the teams. My sincere thanks go to the organisers and the North Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership for funding the tournament.

“Drug and alcohol misuse causes harm for every community in Scotland. It must continue to be at the forefront of the national conversation and it demands our collective attention and effort.

“I want my constituents who are struggling with addiction to know that there are so many people and organisations out there that care about you and want to help.”

David Gallagher, from the North Lanarkshire Recovery Community team, added: “This is the inaugural Recovery Cup that has been organised by Phoenix Futures and North Lanarkshire Recovery Community and has been generously funded by North Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership.

“Street Soccer Scotland kindly agreed to look after the logistics of the competition making sure everything ran smoothly in our first year.

“The focus of the event is to raise the profile of the recovery organisations across Scotland and showcase the amazing work being done to combat alcohol and drug addiction within our communities.”
