In new ‘Pinocchio,’ puppet owes its life to grief and alcohol

When Guillermo del Toro was young, his mom took him to see a rerelease of Disney’s 1940 classic “Pinocchio” in theaters. 

“It was the first movie where I felt that somebody captured how scary childhood felt,” del Toro recalls.
