In form Neilston thump Yoker to close gap at the top of the table to just three points

Neilston held their nerve to smash Yoker and close the gap at the top of the Conference C table.

With current leaders Drumchapel idle at the weekend, the Farmer’s Boys knew a win would take them to within just three points of their title rivals.

And the hosts at the Brig O’Lea Stadium showed no mercy on visitors Yoker, with Kieron Maxwell bagging a hat-trick and Conor Bolger and Dylan Fletcher also on the scoresheet.

Co-manager Chris Cameron was delighted with his side’s performance, with Neilston now having the chance to draw level with Drumchapel next weekend and really pile the pressure on the Glasgow club.

Cameron told Express Sport: “The three points against Yoker was the most important thing, but it was nice to play so well while also getting the job done.

“We knew with Drumchapel out of action we had a great chance to close the gap even more and thankfully we managed to do just that.

“They’re playing in the cup this Saturday so we now know we can draw level with them if we beat St Anthony’s.

“That won’t be easy as St Ant’s are on an incredible run just now.

"They’ve won their last seven and beat us earlier this season.

“We can all sense the opportunity is there for us though and the boys are full of confidence.

"This is the perfect opportunity to put the pressure on Drumchapel.

"No-one has been close to them at the top of the table for several months now, so it’ll be interesting to see how they react to the challenge if we can draw level.”

Cameron was unsurprisingly pleased with the contribution of hat-trick hero Maxwell in Saturday’s rout of Yoker.

And he believes the weight has now been lifted off the attacking midfielder’s shoulders having bagged his first strikes for the Farmer’s Boys.

Cameron said: “Maxwell signed a few months ago now and we knew from his time at Renfrew he was a goalscoring midfielder.

“He hadn’t scored before the Yoker game and had missed a couple of good opportunities in the previous few fixtures.

“You could see the relief on his face when he scored the first and it’s really important the midfield keep chipping in with goals to take the pressure off our forwards a bit.

“Daryl Convery nabbed the winner against Kilsyth the week before and hopefully the midfielders can keep finding the net in the remaining games.”
