Alistair Johnston has been named in Transfermarkt’s World Cup team of the group stage after helping Canada power into the knockout rounds on home soil.

The Celtic full-back has been included in a star-studded XI featuring some of the biggest names in world football, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Erling Haaland.

Johnston has been a standout performer for the hosts, playing a key role in their progression to the last 16, where they will face Morocco. His energetic displays on the right flank have underlined his growing reputation on the international stage.

The Canadian defender’s inclusion comes despite a controversial moment in the opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he escaped a potential red card challenge.

Transfermarkt’s XI sees Johnston line up in a back four alongside Mexico’s Israel Reyes, France centre-back Dayot Upamecano and Germany’s Nathaniel Brown, with Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir behind them.

Further forward, Brazil’s Bruno Guimaraes anchors a diamond midfield that includes Michael Olise, Messi, and Vinicius Jr, while Haaland and Mbappe lead the attack.
