In Dolly Parton's Kitchen, Curated Clutter Somehow Feels Chic – I'm a Minimalist, But I Admit, She's Left Me Inspired

Dolly Parton.

It's certainly no secret that I'm a minimalist, and my favorite celebrity kitchens follow a sleek, clean aesthetic inspired by my own clear countertops. The only thing I love more than a minimalist kitchen, however, is Dolly Parton – and in style that's true to her personality, her kitchen is filled with fun-loving, colorful accessories that are a testament to her warm, light-hearted spirit. They're a reflection of the figure behind the home – something that, I admit, my minimalistic kitchen was lacking, until now, at least.

This is where the idea of 'curated clutter' comes into play. This concept involves intentionally filling a space with eclectic items in a thoughtful, aesthetically pleasing, and personal way. Dolly's white kitchen is the ultimate blueprint.

Her countertops and open shelves replace utilitarian appliances with design-led accessories, including house figurines (like these from Wayfair), pink rattan baskets (also at Wayfair), and a glass flamingo (at Amazon), naturally. I've rounded up some buys inspired by her iconic space below.

I am not alone in my observations. Bo Hellberg, CMO at Scandinavian design icon String Furniture, echoes my newfound argument, reiterating how 'clutter should be seen differently in a kitchen.

'Curated clutter in the kitchen embraces the idea of a curated, yet layered, aesthetic that adds depth and narrative to a space. It’s not about excess, but rather the artful arrangement of objects, textures, and materials that reflect individuality and evoke a sense of personality in the kitchen,' he says.

'By incorporating elements that can evolve with a space, whether through the integration of unique design pieces or versatile storage systems, curated clutter becomes a way to craft personalised and dynamic spaces that are both functional and visually striking.'

I confess, Dolly’s kitchen has made me rethink my own approach entirely. I’m not about to abandon my love of clean lines and clear countertops, but I’ve realised that a kitchen can be both calm and characterful. Curated clutter, when done thoughtfully, doesn’t disrupt a space; it adds a personality my counters never had before. These are the details that turn a kitchen from simply stylish into something that feels truly lived-in.
