In Amritsar, electors in urban seats preferred not to exercise franchise

AMRITSAR :It’s not just Amritsar East assembly constituency, where heavyweights Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bikram Singh Majithia are locked in a direct contest, that registered the low turnout, Amritsar West and Amritsar Central assembly constituencies too recorded poor polling percentages compared to previous elections, raising heckles of the contenders.

According to the Election Commission data, Amritsar East registered 64. 05% turnout, Amritsar West (reserved) 55. 40%, Amritsar Central 59. 19% and Amritsar South 59. 48%. Candidates’ strongman image, intense political rivalries, deep-rooted issues of the constituencies, coupled with the lackadaisical attitude of the current and former MLAs collectively resulted into plummeting of the polling percentages. Voters seemed to have taken ‘sanu ki lena dena’ (what do we care) approach.
