A small solar-powered boat can look almost ordinary until you consider what it has been designed to leave behind. In this case, a Finnish builder spent about $20,700 and roughly 200 days constructing a 36-foot vessel from plywood, fiberglass and epoxy. Earlier in 2026, the boat traveled over 3,000 nautical miles from the Baltic area to the Spanish coast, relying primarily on energy collected from the sun.
The boat's arrival is almost quieter than its journey suggests. There is no conventional exhaust, no fuel smell and no wake worth naming. Across its roof sits a flat sheet of dark blue solar panels. Below that surface are the basic necessities: a bed, a galley, a motor and a battery.
