In 2024, the Baltic Sea gave up a ship filled with royal gifts that never reached a Russian Tsar

A shipwreck discovered in the Baltic Sea in 2024 has opened an extraordinary window into 19th-century European diplomacy. What first appeared to be a collection of old bottles has turned into a remarkable historical mystery involving luxury Champagne, prized mineral water, rare meteorites and gifts believed to have been destined for Russian Czar Alexander II after the Crimean War, as per a report by Smithsonian Magazine.

When Polish divers explored a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea during the summer of 2024, they expected another routine underwater survey. Instead, a single clay bottle stamped with the word "Nassau" led them into a remarkable investigation spanning archives across Europe and uncovering what may be one of the most significant diplomatic cargoes ever found beneath the sea.
