A bird that vanished from Sweden's landscape in the 1950s is now helping guide a much larger restoration effort. In southern Sweden, conservation groups are rebuilding wetlands that once provided food and shelter for White Storks. The project is not simply about bringing back one striking bird. It is about repairing the landscape that disappeared with it.
The White Stork ( Ciconia ciconia ) was once a familiar sight across Sweden's southern agricultural regions. Its disappearance followed decades of wetland drainage, which converted marshy areas into farmland. By 1954, the last breeding attempt had failed, and the species was considered extinct in Sweden.
