In 2019, Victoria's Wyndham City turned 199,000 recycled bottles into a 200-metre footpath. 1 year later, the project had reached 339 metres and delivered 1,700kg in carbon savings

What happens when 199,000 recycled bottles become a concrete footpath? That question is now being tested on a real sidewalk in Australia. The 200-meter path in Hoppers Crossing uses recycled plastic and tiny glass particles within its concrete aggregate. Both materials can be difficult to recycle through conventional systems.

The unusual part is not simply that waste went into the concrete. It is what happened to waste that normally has few useful destinations. Shredded flexible plastic and glass fines were mixed directly into the construction material. Researchers wanted to see whether those discarded materials could perform like more familiar aggregate.
