A river can sometimes seem to disappear without actually going anywhere. Underneath the hard, rocky surface of Texas Hill Country, water may seep into the gaps, crevices, and underground passages and come back to the surface some distance away. In 2017, researchers used a bright green fluorescent dye to demonstrate how this process occurs in the Pedernales River to connect the river with the spring of Pedernales Falls State Park.
