In 2008, the next big car innovation didn't come from steel, it came from coconuts, and the auto industry took notice

Coconut fiber car parts : In 2008, Ford Motor Co. teamed up with Scotts Miracle-Gro Company to test discarded coconut fibers, known as coir, as a renewable material for molded plastic vehicle parts, as per a report. The effort aimed to reduce the use of petroleum while creating lighter components with a more natural look.

Earlier, researchers at Baylor University had also developed technology to use coconut fibers in automotive interior parts such as trunk liners, floorboards and interior door covers.
