In March 1997, the Critérium International peloton suddenly gained an unexpected companion: a horse. The animal had jumped a fence beside the course and landed directly in the path of the fast-moving cyclists. Rather than turning away, it ran alongside the riders, moved through the group and eventually reached the front. The interruption became one of the most memorable moments in the history of the race.
