In 1970, US dumped 2 million tires into the ocean; a plan to save marine life turned into one of the biggest environmental blunders

The Osborne Reef Disaster: Why Florida Dumped 2 Million Tires Off Its Coast? Today's environmental headlines often focus on coral bleaching and plastic pollution, but one of the biggest ocean restoration mistakes in U.S. history actually began with old car tires. More than 50 years ago, millions of discarded tires were intentionally dumped into the Atlantic Ocean off Florida's coast with the hope of creating a thriving artificial reef. Instead of helping marine life, the project turned into a decades-long environmental disaster that scientists and government agencies are still working to fix today.

The story of Florida's Osborne Reef is now widely used as a reminder that even well-intentioned conservation projects can have unintended consequences when they are not backed by long-term science and engineering. As artificial reefs continue to play an important role in protecting marine ecosystems across the United States, this failed experiment remains one of the country's most important environmental lessons.
