In 1884, water hyacinth was introduced at a New Orleans exposition; by 2020, it covered an estimated 24,000 acres of public waterways in Louisiana’s Barataria Basin

A plant admired for its lavender flowers arrived in Louisiana in 1884 as part of the New Orleans Cotton Exposition. Within decades, water hyacinth had become one of the most troublesome aquatic weeds in the southern United States. In the Barataria Basin, the infestation remains substantial: Louisiana records show that about 24,000 acres of public waterways contained water hyacinth in 2020.
