Imran Khan marks three years in prison as anger grows over ex-Pakistan PM’s treatment

  • Human rights activists, including Amnesty International and UN experts, have renewed calls for Pakistani authorities to restore Imran Khan 's access to family, lawyers, and adequate medical care, marking three years since his imprisonment .
  • Amnesty International specifically urged an end to "unlawful" restrictions on his detention, highlighting that Khan has not met his family for over eight months and his vision has significantly deteriorated due to a blocked retinal vein.
  • The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded in 2024 that Khan's imprisonment was arbitrary, while UN special rapporteurs have expressed concerns about his detention conditions, with one expert calling for an end to his "inhumane treatment" including near-total solitary confinement.
  • Khan, who was removed as prime minister in April 2022 and arrested on 5 August 2023, is serving a 14-year sentence for corruption and was also convicted with his wife in a separate state gifts case, though both convictions are under appeal.
  • Despite government claims of improved living conditions and access, Khan remains Pakistan's most influential opposition figure, with his incarceration strengthening his image among supporters as a symbol of resistance against military interference in politics.
