‘Impossible’ question on GCSE exam leaves 16-year-olds and teachers baffled

Students were left baffled thanks to a particularly harsh exam question on a maths paper.

Teenagers who sat the Edexcel GCSE Maths paper said that they were scratching their heads over one particular task. One parent told the Manchester Evening News that some teachers at their child’s school really struggled to come up with the answer to the ‘impossible’ maths question.

A University of Manchester maths student even took to social media to admit he found it ‘tough.’ Candidates were required to attempt to work out the area of the shaded part of some circles if all the circles have a radius of four.

"A tough one, even I had to spend some time looking where to start," Manchester university student Harry Surplus tweeted. Students were not impressed by the question, with some even taking to social media to complain that the question was too difficult to complete.

"Sorry #EdexcelMaths but what was that last question," one student tweeted. Another said they spent '20 mins... just staring at the last question'.

Maths teacher Jonathan Baker also took to Twitter to offer the correct method of answering the question. As well as perplexing many teens, the conundrum is sure to leave many in a cold sweat as they have flashbacks to their own tough maths exams. Edexcel have been approached for comment.
