A Colorado woman lounges on her cream-colored couch in a brand-new, pink Gap sweatsuit. She warns other shoppers not to buy the same outfit after what she sees when she stands up.
TikToker Mia Nicole (@mia.nicole.b) posts a video of her couch, which garnered over 3.1 million views. Her partner sits across from it, covering his face in disbelief.
On-screen text reads, “PSA: Do not buy the GAP sweatsuit. It ruined our couch (I was sitting on the couch for 1-2 hours). This was after I spent an hour cleaning it.”
The couch has a prominent, bright pink dye stain where Nicole sat. The caption reads, “Do not buy the pink set from Gap!”
Why did the bright pink dye transfer to the couch?
Color bleed from vibrant clothing can happen due to a combination of what dye the factory uses, the fabric it’s applied to, and how a shopper washes the garment.
According to How Stuff Works, natural fabrics like wool and cotton have a harder time holding on to dyes than synthetic fibers. Plus, red, pink, and orange dye tends to be more unstable than others, causing more bleeding.
Gap’s sweatsuits are made with 77% cotton, which could be a factor in why the dye transferred onto the TikToker’s couch.
Have other shoppers had the same issue with Gap sweatsuits?
Several Gap shoppers say they also ruined furniture they sat in while wearing their sweatsuits, some causing awkward situations with friends and family.
“I pre-washed mine, and it still did this to my mother-in-law’s brand new white sofa on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She posted about it on Facebook and told everyone I refused to pay for a new 15k couch right then and there. Who has that much money laying around???” a distressed commenter shares.
Another writes, “I went to return mine after the same thing happened to me and before I could fully get the set out of the bag the employee said ‘no need to explain why you are here.'”

Others share ways to remedy the situation.
“Yes, and wash them in a black load of laundry! I also threw in a couple of color catchers,” one says.
“This happened to me on a new white boucle couch and a friend’s black dress dye went all over! Use folex to take out as much as you can and then use a LOT of hairspray! I would spray the hairspray all over, let it sit for an hour or more then use an upholstery cleaner! I repeated so many times, but it’s the only thing that took dye out,” a second suggests.
