The state’s Supreme Court justices peppered attorneys with questions Tuesday during arguments over a controversial provision of the landmark SAFE-T Act that would make Illinois the first state in the nation to abolish cash bail.
The provision was to go into effect Jan. 1 under the wide-ranging criminal justice reform bill, but it was challenged by a flurry of last-minute lawsuits by roughly 60 sheriffs and state’s attorneys.
