Illinois might become the first-ever American state to stop book bans

At a time when America is witnessing book bans, the news is that Illinois is going to become the first state to end book bans and censorship.

"Governor JB Pritzker is expected to sign a bill that would make Illinois the first state to legislate to end book bans – by punishing publicly-funded institutions that attempt to censor in that way," reads a report by The Guardian.

The bill, if signed by Pritzker, will block state funding for public schools and libraries in Illinois if they ban books from January 1.

"Only libraries in the state that adhere to the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, which states that reading materials should not be removed or restricted because of partisan or personal disapproval, or develop a written statement prohibiting the practice of banning books within a library system will continue to get its state funding," reported The Guardian.

Commenting on the development, Pritzker said in a statement in March, “In Illinois, we don’t hide from the truth...Banning books is a devastating attempt to erase our history and the authentic history of many.”

Meanwhile, Alexi Giannoulias- Illinois secretary of state, appreciated the new bill which tries to ban on reading materials, which is majorly due to political reasons.
