An illegal immigrant, Gilver Zelaya-Diaz, 42, was recently arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Jacques Price in Montgomery County, Maryland. Zelaya-Diaz, who has multiple aliases, entered the country illegally in 2019 and has a history of various charges, including driving offenses, armed robbery, assault, and drug-related charges.
Zelaya-Diaz was released from federal prison in July 2023 and was on probation at the time of the incident. Price, a father and uncle, was fatally struck by a vehicle while riding a skateboard. The driver fled the scene, leading to a week-long search before Zelaya-Diaz was apprehended with the help of license plate databases and vehicle records.
Due to his criminal record and history of missing court dates, prosecutors requested that Zelaya-Diaz be held until trial. He is currently in custody at the Montgomery County Correctional facility. Price's father, Marcus Glivings, expressed gratitude for Zelaya-Diaz's arrest, stating that despite not changing the situation, apprehending him was a relief.
A memorial at the crash site includes a white skateboard nailed to a telephone pole, along with flowers, candles, and pictures in honor of Price. Glivings emphasized that Price was an innocent victim who did not deserve such a tragic fate. The community continues to mourn the loss of Price and seeks justice for the hit-and-run incident.
