Illegal driver chased on M1 rang 999 and said he 'didn't believe we were police'

A driver chased by the police on the M1 rang 999 to say 'he didn't believe we were police'. According to police over the border in Derbyshire, the driver failed to stop after a pursuit over the course of a few junctions on the motorway.

The male driver was behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Astra. But he rang 999, and said that he did not believe the car he was being followed by was a police vehicle, despite it having a bright yellow livery with the word 'police' written in large, bold, blue letters across the bonnet.

Police said the motorist was driving without a licence or insurance. The Astra has been seized, the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said on Twitter.

The roads policing unit posted a picture of their vehicle on Twitter alongside the Vauxhall Astra. The Astra can be seen on the back of a tow truck after it was seized by police officers. The Tweet caused amusement among social media users, with comments including "nice try" and "I've heard it all now".
