Illan Meslier hammered for 'really poor' mistake in Leeds United's defeat at Bournemouth

Former Leeds United defender Jon Newsome has taken aim Illan Meslier for his part in gifting Bournemouth their second goal in their 4-1 thrashing of the Whites on Sunday afternoon. The Frenchman flapped at a corner, allowing Jefferson Lerma his second goal of the contest, with a tap-in on 24 minutes.

In truth, the Cherries didn't have to work very hard for their opening two goals of the clash. Lerma opened the scoring for the hosts after just 20 minutes and won't score an easier goal than his second.

Newsome told BBC Radio Leeds: “That’s awful, dare I say, from the keeper, Meslier, that’s really, really poor.”

Bournemouth's two-goal lead after just 24 minutes left Leeds with a mountain to climb on the south coast. The game was dubbed a six-pointer heading into the tie and Patrick Bamford handed the Whites a lifeline heading into half-time.

Nonetheless, Javi Gracia's side couldn't muster an improved second-half performance with Bournemouth winning the game 4-1. The Whites squandered a golden opportunity to put some daylight between themselves and their bottom three rivals, with the result all but confirming the Cherries' status in the top flight next season.

Everton, Leicester City and West Ham all have a game in hand on Leeds, but it's unlikely they'll drop into the bottom three with the Toffees set to play the Foxes on Monday night.
