This appointment is more than a change in anchor; it represents a major step forward in visibility and significance for Latina women in journalism.

Born in Colombia, Calderón has built a career filled with accomplishments and challenges, showcasing inspirational determination and professionalism.

Her commitment to covering issues relevant to the Latino community and her ability to report on global matters have earned her the trust of a broad and loyal audience. Her journalistic influence has already been recognized with two Emmy Awards and the prestigious Paul White Award from RTDNA, making her the first Afro-Latina to receive this honor.

Making History On Screen

Calderón's career includes unforgettable moments, such as moderating the 2020 Democratic presidential debate, covering major natural disasters, interviews with political leaders, and reporting on social issues.

Univision News President Daniel Coronell highlighted Calderón's impact: "Calderón is an example and inspiration for the entire team... Her life tells a story of overcoming adversity and achieving success through hard work and dedication."

Expressing her enthusiasm and sense of duty, Calderón said, "I am fully aware of the responsibility I take on as the voice of Univision's outstanding journalistic team... We will work together to earn the trust of the Hispanic community every day." She emphasized the importance of the audience's trust, recognizing her role as a crucial source of information in times when misinformation especially impacts vulnerable communities.

With almost 20 years at Univision, Calderón closely collaborated with Jorge Ramos, a long-standing icon of Univision's newscasts. Ramos shared his confidence in Calderón's capabilities: "I have witnessed Ilia's impeccable career, and I wish her the best in this new chapter."

Other Women Leading Evening Newscasts in the U.S.

In the history of U.S. evening newscasts, only three women have led these programs solo, all in English.

Katie Couric was the first to do so in 2006 as the solo anchor of 'CBS Evening News.' Diane Sawyer followed as the first woman to lead 'ABC World News' in 2009, and more recently, in 2019, Norah O'Donnell took on the role at 'CBS Evening News.'
