A Labour MP is facing calls from within his own party to resign after some of the 15 London flats he rents out were found to have “pretty serious faults”.
Jas Athwal, who represents Ilford South, has already apologised to tenants after black mould and ant infestations were discovered.
On Sunday he doubled down on his apology and said he has sacked the managing agent of his properties - but the newly elected MP has faced calls to leave office himself.
“As the landlord, the buck stops with me, and I unreservedly apologise to my tenants for the unacceptable experiences they have endured,” he tweeted.
“I will be reimbursing every tenant that is out of pocket for repairs or renewals they have had to undertake.
“I will be conducting a survey of my tenants, so that all issues are uncovered and I am confident each one is living in secure, comfortable homes.”
Mr Athwal was elected as an MP for the first time in July having previously been the leader of Redbridge Council.

The list of faults was extensive with a London City Hall member claiming he saw fire detectors hanging by a single piece of wire when he visited them.
Mr Athwal also admitted some of his flats may not have the correct property licences required under a scheme he introduced during his time in local government.
He added: “I am shocked and sickened by the series of problems that have come to light. I had not been aware of these issues until this week, for which I am furious.
“I have immediately dismissed the managing agent of my properties.”
The apology, however, has not been accepted by everyone - even within Labour.
Jo Rigby, a Labour councillor for Balham, tweeted in response: “Not good enough Jas. How can you run a business and not know the conditions you are operating?
“Sloppy and greedy. As a Labour councillor, I'm ashamed you are representing our party.
“Resign now.”
Former Labour Carlisle councillor Calvin Rodgerson added: “You’re going to be an unnecessary thorn in this Labour government's side whilst ever you’re in parliament, do the right thing and go.”
