Real Madrid star Iker Casillas has revealed that he is gay.
Taking to Twitter, the 41 year-old wrote on Sunday afternoon: "I hope you respect me: I'm gay." Casillas shares two sons with sports journalist Sara Carbonero, whom he was married to for five years before their separation in March 2021.
He is one of the most prominent footballers in history to reveal their sexuality. After his admission The ex-Spain goalkeeper was met with a wave of support from other players including from Barcelona icon and his former Spain teammate, Carles Puyol, reports the Mirror.
Casillas, who retired in 2020 after suffering a cardiac arrest during training with final club Porto, is remembered for being one of football's most successful goalkeepers.
The Spaniard won one World Cup, two European Championships, five La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.
