IKEA's Adjustable Plant Shelf is a Small-Space Savior for my Tiny Balcony – and it Looks Gorgeous, Too

A collection of potted houseplants on an open air balcony.

If you're the proud owner of a small garden – or, like me, an inner-city balcony – you'll know that it doesn't take long until your floor space begins to resemble a jungle. I'm always on the lookout for new (and compact) ways to display my plants, and this is where vertical shelving comes in.

While there are plenty of options out there, you could say that I'm a little fussy – but IKEA's LÄCKÖ shelving unit has my seal of approval.

This handsome piece is just one of the joys to be found in the IKEA spring gardening collection. With no fewer than four large shelves, it's crafted from steel and finished with a rust-resistant coating. Plus, crucially, it's as stylish as it is functional.

The Pros to Vertical Shelves on a Balcony

Forget tripping over outdoor planters: vertical shelving units will bring your pots right up to eye level, so they're easier to care for and far better placed to be admired.

Vertical units also help you save valuable floor space for bigger planters, while transforming even standard pots into a real design moment.

Naturally, however, shelving like the LÄCKÖ unit isn't simply designed for displaying plants. If you're looking to create more storage space in your yard or even your garage, durable units like this one provide the perfect spot to keep tools, spare pots, and containers. I'd say they're an impressively stylish answer to garden storage.

Inspired by traditional wrought-iron furniture, this product carries the kind of romantic look that elevates any space.

While the shelves are purely practical – each one has a perforated surface, helping water to drain away – the frame is subtly sophisticated.

I'm always on the hunt for chic display units, but simpler silhouettes usually work best in my balcony garden, and this one is perfect: the upper railings are gently curved, creating an elegant shape that doesn't feel too ornate.

I'll admit that I'm wary about investing in shelving that requires a hefty amount of DIY, but this unit is simple to assemble. Simply screw the side railings into the back panel, secure the shelves onto each level, and your new display unit will come to life.

The best part? This particular unit features handy adjustable feet, so it will stand perfectly on uneven ground. I've battled with plenty of bumpy paving stones in the past, but it's always a relief to know that this won't prevent me from showing off my plants.

Why Shoppers Love the IKEA LÄCKÖ Shelving Unit

I wasn't surprised to find these shelves have more than 340 five-star reviews, as it's easy to see why they are so popular.

'This is my second time purchasing this shelving unit,' says one reviewer. 'I use it as both an indoor and outdoor plant stand, and it has worked beautifully.'

While IKEA recommends these shelves for outdoor use, they're also perfectly suited to indoor spaces – though it's best to secure them to a wall to ensure that they remain as sturdy as possible.

Many customers also say they use the LÄCKÖ shelving unit on a deck area – both to display plants and to increase outdoor privacy.

'I bought this unit to serve double duty: both as a place for some plants and to obscure the view somewhat when the shelves are filled,' writes one reviewer. 'They're perfect for plants and a bit of privacy.'

And when it comes to assembly, the verdict is overwhelmingly positive.

'This shelving unit is simple to assemble – I did it in less than 10 minutes,' reads one review. 'It's sturdy and looks good.' I certainly can't ask for much more than that.
