World number one Iga Swiatek has won the 2022 French Open after defeating Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final.
It is Swiatek's second Grand Slam win, having previously won the French Open back in 2020 after beating Sofia Kenin in the final. And she has been in a stunning run of form, having entered this year's final on a 34-match unbeaten streak after winning her past five tournaments in a row.
Gauff, meanwhile, was playing in her first ever Grand Slam singles final and the 18-year-old was utterly dominated in the first set. Swiatek quickly went 4-0 up and ultimately won it 6-1.
However, Gauff initially enjoyed a much more productive second set as she fought back to go 2-1 up. Ultimately, though, Swiatek's class shone through as she eventually won the set 6-3 and claimed her second Grand Slam singles trophy.
After claiming the winning point, Swiatek fell to her knees in celebration, while Gauff was left in tears. In total, it took just 68 minutes for Swiatek to win the final, underlining just how dominant a win it was.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, British player Naomi Broady was full of praise for Swiatek. "It will be interesting to see which player will spark up a rivalry with Swiatek but at the moment she is far and away above everyone else," Broady said.
"She is actually double the points away from the world number two. That how many leaps and bounds she is ahead of everyone."
Reflecting on the final, Gauff said: "This is a first time for me so let’s try to get through this. Well done to Iga, you totally deserve this.
"Maybe we can meet in another final and I can get a win on you one day. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get this one today, hopefully this is the first final of many."
