It's been three years since a new series of Luther was released on our screens and fans of the hit detective drama will be pleased to hear it doesn't sound like there is long to wait until the characters return - but this time on the big screen. In an interview with Capital Xtra on Wednesday, Hollywood star Idris Elba, who plays DCI John Luther, teased what fans can expect from the movie.
He explained how the upcoming film, which is nearing completion, is a “massive achievement” for both the cast and crew. Although the plot is being kept under wraps, the film will continue to follow the story of haunted rogue Detective Chief Inspector John Luther - which had a successful five series on the BBC.
“I feel like definitely the film is a massive achievement for all of us. We love the film. We’re still finishing it up now," Idris told presenter Robert Bruce: “I think the fans that are worried about, ‘Wow, now Luther is going to get Hollywood’ – I don’t think they need to worry about that. I think we have definitely paid attention to the core fans.
“But we have also left room for people who don’t know Luther to kind of say, ‘Let me get involved’. I can’t wait for people to see it. I am so proud to see a Luther film. From 10 years of a TV show to now a film. It’s amazing for me.”
It will be available on streaming site Netflix and series creator Neil Cross returned to write the film. It was announced in September 2021, that award-winning actress of stage and screen Cynthia Erivo, including Andy Serkis, who is best known as Gollum in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, will star alongside Idris in the new film.
In the fifth series of Luther, which in January 2019, the detective’s murderous sidekick Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson, made a return despite fears from fans after fans she had died at the end of the series four.
Idris Elba also told Capital Xtra he has hopes to work with Leonardo DiCaprio in the future, after meeting the star at a party. He'd also like to make a film with fellow British actor Daniel Kaluuya.
