I'd never thought one of my favorite underrated Xbox Soulslikes would get a sequel, but I'm glad Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember proved me wrong

A stern samurai in ornate armor stands amidst a fiery backdrop, exuding strength and intensity. Flames and embers enhance the dramatic, intense scene.

During the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Koei Tecmo made an appearance to show off a reveal trailer for Wo Long 2: Flames of Ember. This game is a sequel to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, a 2023 Soulslike action game made by Team Ninja, a team of developers most for creating the Nioh series and 3D Ninja Gaiden games.

Like the first game, Wo Long 2: Flames of Ember will take players on a brutal and dark journey through the war-torn lands of China during its Three Kingdoms Era (specifically the late Eastern Han period), and battle horrifying monsters alongside legendary heroes from that moment in history.

The game will feature a fast-paced, grueling combat system where the player will need to master Chinese martial arts and the powers of a mystical Phoenix if they hope to survive, because enemies are vicious and will punish you hard for making the slightest mistake.

Wo Long 2: Flames of Ember is set to release sometime in early 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Game Pass with Xbox Play Anywhere support. It's also coming out on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.

On top of that, Koei Tecmo has announced (via Xbox Wire) that the original game, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, is now available on Xbox Game Pass to help new and returning players catch up on the series' story and get to grips with its core gameplay mechanics before the sequel arrives.

Windows Central's take

Back in 2023, I got the chance to preview the original Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and later play the full version after reading my colleague Brendon Lowry's glowing 4.5/5 review of it.

It was an amazing game filled with insanely over-the-top and brutally hard bosses, diverse ways to customize your character from looks to fighting style, and an addictive, fast-paced combat system that rewarded aggression and punished cowardice

On top of that, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is one of the few Soulslike action games to pull off online co-op and PVP without making players jump through convoluted systems to get it to work, like you would in most FromSoftware games (you would not believe the amount of trouble I had with Elden Ring's multiplayer feature before the Seamless co-op mod fixed it).

I loved Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty so much that I even started writing guides about how its combat system worked, how to join friends in multiplayer, and how to defeat Lu Bu, one of the game's more challenging bosses.

So, I'm happy to see Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty get a sequel because its combat system and Morale gameplay mechanic are filled with so much potential to be explored further.

Not to mention, Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember could be a chance to iron out some of the original game's niggling issues, like how a majority of magic spells were not viable in combat due to their long casting times, or adding unique special abilities/passive traits to add more variety to gear.

Either way, I can't wait to return to Koei Tecmo's dark reimagining of China's Three Kingdoms-Era when Wo Long 2: Wings of Embers arrives on Xbox in 2027.

After all, if we never get Koei Tecmo's more well-known Nioh series on Xbox (as much as I wish it were so because Nioh is just as crazy fun, if not more so than Wo Long), at least we'll have the Wo Long series as a more than suitable substitute.
