Iconic Manchester comedy club dubbed ‘the best in the world’ is moving to a new venue

XS Malarkey, the long-running comedy night, has announced that its heading to a new home. It will be moving from The Bread Shed to new club Canvas on Oxford Road.

The club will continue to run as it always has, on Tuesdays nights, from the new venue, starting from next week. “We had a great time at The Bread Shed, welcoming some A List talent like Russell Kane, Sophie Willan and Gary Delaney,” said the night’s founder Toby Hadoke.

“But we were wooed by Canvas, which is a fantastic space with a brilliant team, cracking vibe and a layout and technical facilities we could only dream of. This will enable us to pull of similarly strong bookings but in a great environment.”

The club, which is a non-profit enterprise, was first spawned at Scruffy Murphy’s pub in Fallowfield in 1997, holding events at various other venues before settling at the Bread Shed for the past nine years. It has played host to dozens of world famous comedians, from Peter Kay to John Bishop, with Joe Lycett calling it ‘the best comedy club in the world’.

Iain Cartwright, General Manager of Canvas said: “We are so proud to be associated with XS Malarkey and look forward to partnering with them - they’re the perfect match for what we are aiming to achieve here at Canvas. We’ve been wanting to do comedy for ages and having such a legendary club providing it for us is a dream come true.”

Forthcoming acts include Sara Barron (Live at the Apollo, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order), Australian comedian Randy Feltface, Viggo Venn from Norway, and YouTube star Rosie Holt. The club also won the award for Best Independent Comedy Club for the fourth year running at last night’s North West Comedy Awards.
