'Iconic' Britannia hotel that 'stinks' when you walk past 'left to rot'

An "iconic" seaside hotel has been "left to rot" by Britannia according to guests.

The Grand Hotel, in Llandudno, is currently the town's worst rated hotel, sitting at 53rd place on TripAdvisor with the majority of users giving it a one-star rating. The raft of "terrible" reviews prompted popular youtuber Walk With Me Tim, who has reviewed dozens of seaside resorts online, to pay the hotel a visit to see if it "is as bad as some people say"

The historic hotel opened its doors in 1902 and is now owned by Britannia, which has recently been named the UK's worst hotel chain for the ninth consecutive year by Which? and owns Liverpool's Adelphi Hotel. In Tim's 23-minute video, the Youtuber explored The Grand from top to bottom and came across "stained and dirty" walls, bad odours, and "pretty grim" dirty windows that obscure the stunning coastal views.

And now ECHO readers have reacted to the famous hotel's apparent demise. Commenting on Facebook, Ellie Batiste said: "Such a stunning building with amazing views. It could be an incredible hotel, but instead, it’s an absolute hole."

Jennifer Jane echoed Ellie's sentiments about the hotel's squandered potential, commenting: "This hotel has great potential, it's a shame the state it's in. The location is the best a hotel can have in Llandudno.

"Suprised people still stay there when there's much nicer/modern hotels close by. The place stinks as you walk past...wouldn't stay if it was free. Sad to see such an historic building lose its prestige"

Nets Fantastico Hodkinson said: "What a shame, such a beautiful building with so much history left to rot," while Tracey Curran said: "The prices they charge are extortionate. I stayed in it once I would never stay in it again, the place is disgusting."

Shaun Morrison said: "I stayed in there about five years ago and it was really grotty, run down and neglected. We were on the top floor and the lifts were out of order."

However, some readers have jumped to the defence of The Grand. Emily Griffiths said: "I've stayed there. It was dated yes but our room was lovely, no issues at all but everyone has there own opinion."

Jenny Harrison said: "I usually stay here twice a year in sea view family rooms and never had an issue. The floor can be creaky but it's an old building and the outside windows do need cleaning but my rooms have always been spotless."

John Luxton has suggested that Britannia take action to improve the quality of their hotels. He said: "The problem is the buildings are very large, old and expensive to maintain.

"What Britannia should do is convert part of each building into private apartments and sell them. Then use the money earned to reinvest and move the retained part of the building up market."

The ECHO has approached Britannia for comment.
