Ice cream, berries and porridge among foods you should throw out due to safety concerns

Every so often, a food safety recall alert is issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, warning the public of any dangers they could find in their cupboard.

The FSAI publish the alerts in great detail, usually detailing the product type, the batches that are affected and the reason that they're being pulled back.

The alerts are usually amplified by media to help the public become aware of what they should and shouldn't throw out.

Here's our latest roundup of the foods you need to get rid of right now.

Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Crunch Collection

The popular treat was found to contain an unauthorised pesticide, ethylene oxide, which can be a risk to people’s health if consumed on a regular basis.

The batch included in the recall is the pack size of 4x95ml with a best-before date of 23/03/2023.

A warning published by the FSAI today read: “The above batch of Häagen-Dazs Duo Vanilla Crunch Collection ice cream is being recalled due to the presence of the unauthorised pesticide ethylene oxide.

“Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU.

“Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide in contaminated food over a long period of time."

Galberts Plant-Based Dessert’s Lemon Cheesecake

FSAI recall cheesecake sold in Irish supermarkets as un-listed allergy could be fatal for some (FSAI)

The recall includes the pack size ‘2 x 100g’ across all batches and all expiry dates.

The product contains walnuts, which some people are highly allergic to, but does not list them in the ingredients or warn of their presence in the allergens section.

The warning from the FSAI read: “Walnuts were detected in an ingredient of the cheesecake base but they were not an intentional ingredient and are therefore not mentioned on the label.

“This may make the affected batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of walnuts.”
