Q&A

Question Answer
I missed the Leaderboard alert for UPRO yesterday. Would you suggest I buy here at the open. We don't ever like buying anything right at the open — we like looking at intraday charts to help us pinpoint strong entries. We'll get the team's thoughts on where the market stands. Maybe this reversal will stick, but we don't know yet.
GM from Cape Cod Hey Phil
good morning! Hi Darren!
GM IBD Live! It will be an interesting week. Let's roll! Good morning! Yes, indeed.
Discuss bear market rallies. beware. I agree! Don't get caught in any bear traps y'all!
GM Everyone! Jackie Greene and I must have had the same grandmother. Ha! :) Love Jackie Greene!
Discuss follow through please While it's too early to happen, we'll be watching for one. Day 4 FTDs to Day 6 FTDs are usually the strongest, based on recent history. Pls see "Follow Through Day" Investor's Corner on the Live FAQ page, Thanks Dick! HatMan
Good Morning IBD Live. Looking forward to a great day with all of you. Likewise!!!
GM DSC. The games were easier to digest compared to this market. What a ride! What.A.Ride.Indeed!!!
with the terrible action in the market what type of screens should we be running each night? A wide net approach? Exactly; high EPS Ratings may help but many of the big winners with strong profit growth, as you know, have corrected big time.
High guys, Bill has made so much research of how the past leaders are the fastest to go down on corrections, why does it make sense to treat some leaders as long term leaders and try to hold them on LB. Specially talking about NVDA I'm completely out of NVDA (and everything else). Selling doesn't have to be all-or-nothing; a close below the 40-week line this week would likely mark a sell signal for longer-term shareholders, i.e. spring 2020. Right now getting support
there but we'll see. Also, NVDA isn't on our long-term leaders list due to a lack of earnings stability. But it definitely was a market leader in 2020/2021. LB team likely looking at that 40-week line with this one given the big profit
cushion.
Where can we find the historical PE for a stock/index on the IBD site? Only available for the Dow jones industrials, pls see the Psychological Indicators table at IBD Data Tables
What ever happened to the regression analysis of the market charts? No longer holding in a channel, haven't for a while. We'll need a new uptrend to create a new channel!
Justin - Do you recall if Bill O'Neil ever held a stock with a small loss into an EPS report? He wasn't super focused on earnings reports, especially in the early days I was working for him in the early 00s. A lot of times he was expecting a lot of it was already priced into the chart. Regulation FD started to change that. But I would
say it was only the bellwether stocks or stocks that he had a large position in that he would pay much attention to the earnings reports. He was more likely to watch the chart action before and after for any action that "looked funny."
Hi David Ryan, any tips on how to develop "sit out" power & discipline ? (like what MarkMinervini keeps saying :-D) live answered
"1) David R. and Scott talk about how they look through stocks on Sunday. David has said that he goes through the Daily Graphs and Marketsmith Growth 250 lists. Can one do the same thing on Saturday or Friday afternoon after the market closes?
Or, are the stocks in the Daily Graph report and Marketsmith Growth 250 different on Sunday than on Friday afternoon?
2) How often and what time of day is the Marketsmith Growth 250 list, and the 2000 stocks listed in the Daily Graph report updated in Marketsmith?" Thanks for this Q, Thomas! I would reach out to our product coaches at reachus@marketsmith.com for the most accurate answer here on when exactly the lists are updated.
Any leveraged ETF's you suggest ??? Two to watch are ProShares Ultra S&P500 SSO and ProShares UltraPro QQQ TQQQ.
Can we review panel's invested % and are they buying in this market? Outside my core TSLA posn, I am 90% cash, watching a number of tiny positions including CF, watching the ag chemical firms and car companies. HatMan
I notice that BLDR reversed up yesterday and looks to open higher also. Nice to see everyone. live answered
Good morning, I don't see any update for LB Market School commentary from yesterday? Checking... thanks Jeff
VRTX and SIMO are good picks. Anyone buy GLD at 171.04 live answered
sand in the line for UPRO and criteria for full position instead of half I'm sure Chris will discuss his up-to-the-minute thinking on this one today!
What is Chris' symbol this morning? CWK
GM IBD Live. Thoughts on ticker KLA? Earnings are due Jan 27, so that could shake up the stock a little. Definitely a big slide last week. We'll see if it can reclaim the 50-day.
Assuming we quickly have a follow-up day and most stocks have not yet formed a base, describe how we might choose stocks. Are we limited to those within new bases? How about old bases? Or, can we start positions without bases formed, either
old or new?
Stocks in oil & gas are some of the ones holding up the best in this market, we'll review some today. Can also get expsoure w/ broad market ETFs as the market turns if stocks haven't built/broken out of bases yet
Tela tested and found support at the double bottom. Positive sign? Positive that it rebounded from those lows, but obviously this is market driven (like the sell-off). Personally, I don't know if TSLA really qualifies as a double-bottom anymore, though that's not too important right now.
"Is there a tool on MS to measure % high to low over a period of time?
Eg in SPY
479.98 to 420.76" Hi, yes click on the button in the upper right with the four dark squares. You can change start and end date. Then it will show you the % change in upper left.
For the most part aren't many of the tech stocks less effected by interest rate increases People discount future growth based on interest rates. As rates rise, that's a bad sign for tech/growth stocks, especially those with very high P-E ratios.
OLPX was up almost 10% yesterday and 2.5% today. Is someone accumulating? Perhaps! It's quite a ways away but we'll see if it can reclaim the 50-day line.
Hey Dave, yesterday was brutal. Wringing out the excesses!
No sound just stopped I'm still getting sound — would quit other applications if you have other stuff running. Zoom gets cranky when there isn't a dedicated connection, at least in my experience
Did yesterday count as day 1 to a FTD? Yesterday counted as day one of the rally attempt. So as long as indexes stay above yesterday's low, the rally attempt stays alive.
if ukraine situation worsens will put oil prices on fuego Probably. But it'll have a massive impact on European nat gas prices (I don't know how that'll translate to U.S. nat gas prices).
UPRO has a buy range of $57.36 - $57.36 on Leaderboard, i.e. the low and high are the same, there is no range. Is this intentional? If so, is there a reason there there isn't a ~5% buy range? Thank you! In this type of market, managing risk is more important than ever. We wouldn't want anyone buying UPRO extended and using the same stop we're using. Need to be careful with leveraged ETFs!

Someone just bought a huge lot of GLD live answered
Would a distribution day be closing at least .2% below yesterday's close? To answer that, this article gives all the ins and outs of the distribution day: https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/how-to-spot-stock-market-tops-track-the-distribution-days/
How do we add day to day to see how market unfolds in past charts? In MS you can change the date and then click the arrow where the date is to advance each trading day.
Looks like IAU and GLD on move this morning..... live answered
check out GLD live answered
Justin in the examples of 3 waves down that you are showing, how often did Follow Through Days not work? In 2018, there were two failed follow-through days before the third one worked
Can we checkout gld could be breaking out live answered
Gold jumped UP !!!! Will you please look at gold stocks? I let the team know a few mins ago that we should take a look! Should be going there soon
Did David Ryan say he added DVN to his portfolio yesterday, while market in correction? yes
David are you still in EQNR? live answered
please double check that DVM yield. my screen says 0.933%. The ticker is DVN. Devon Energy Corp. Current yield shows 7% on my MarketSmith charts.
Did David R. say he picked up DVN yesterday.... Yes
"VNOM is acting well, and has held above a 3 pt trendline.
Business has a association with FANG." live answered
What's the plan for UPRO in Leaderboard? Any early exit line in the sand? If the market keeps falling, I think we'll get out early, that would be an expectation breaker.
Devon Energy's (DVN) yield is closer to 4.2%, instead of 7%. They have paid $1.97 in dividends in the past 52 weeks. live answered
Allie: Subscribed to the youtube channel yesterday. I remember when you were an IPO on Investors.com. Now breaking out of a second stage base on the way to long term leader status!! Inspiring. Wow, thank you Richard!! I appreciate the comparison, ha! Thank you for all the support and kind words!! This community is the best!
Can you also ask them to show the GLD monthly chart and possibly explain what looks to be a massive cup and handle? live answered
VNOM-be aware this is a limited partnership. Brings up some added tax ramifications. You receive a K-1 for your partnership interest and those often don't come out till April and May which means a wait on filing tax return. live answered
For CWK with asending pattern .Is that a good sign? live answered
MS pattern recognition no longer showing ascending base for CF. Why? Good question! I'm not sure
What do you thin on M, DSS and KSS…yesterday they rocket!! and other commet yesterday I chech which groups have better performance and the first 8 groups where in retail!! You had an unsolicted offer for KSS that moved the stocks. I hesitate to speculate too much on M&A news. The deal doesn't go through and the stock can fall apart. The deal goes through and the offer is already priced in, you couldn't participate
because it gapped up, so there is little reward. Your best case scenario is there is they have to up their price or their is a bidding war. I just feel like it's usually a case where the risk is greater than the reward.
Can we talk about a UPRO strategy? live answered
TSLA is always around 900 to 950 .The drop for today is less than SPY %. Does it mean that TSLA is great stock? live answered
Only AXP and UPST are up on my watch lists. live answered
David UPST is up for the day. Any thoughts just watching it for now
comments on the monthly GLD chart. live answered
never mind! they just got to it. The Maestro: David Chung
David - Check out TLK. Thinky traded, but strong RS. Will do, thanks Jeff
MSFT -- would love to hear pre-earnings take on it's recent action ...... live answered
GLD has a long handle because it has a long cup, in years that is live answered
Enphase has really crashed-I've lost 40 percent-shame on me. It still has a P/E of110. Any thoughts on holding vs selling at this point? David Ryan addressing this now
How about looking at some miners? live answered
GOLD and KL had nice runs in early 2020 coming out of the Covid crash. They broke out around the same time as DXCM and NFLX at the start of that Covid rally. live answered
We have to wait until the gold mining shows get taken off of the air and they switch to a Bitcoin mining series Might not be the most exciting show...Watch a bunch of computers sitting there doing trillions of calculations to solve complicated problems. Must see TV!
How to manage risk on the LB UPRO entry of yesterday? Trimm if break of the low of yesterday? That would be already a 12% loss, start living below the 200 or not beeing able to breake the high of yesterday? Considering a trim to a half if it goes below today's lows, which would be down a little over 3% from our entry
A lot of high growth stocks have round tripped and made a perfect bell curve down 50-80% from their highs. What is a typical timeline for such stocks to come back up, if at all. Have you had instances where they made a new high in the next
12-18 months? Are they just no touch even if fundamentals are sound?
We do not buy on fundamentals alone. Analyzing chart action is absolutely KEY before buying!
LNG is in the middle of the range of a flat base with RS line just at 6 year high and just above 50 day line. Can you talk about this one? It undercut the 50-day line but then reversed higher. The initial breakout failed but it could retake the buy zone. Hitting resistance at the 21-day line. I like the RS line.
nem is above the 50ma live answered
Where you guys playing the intraday 'cup with handle' on UPRO yesterday when it got above the 57.41 level late in the day? Hi Joseph, partly that, I think, but it was more the team's gut feeling that this sell-off was oversold in the short term.
For leaderboard you were buying up the 3x, but on LIve yesterday you do talk about waiting for a follow through day. Can you talk through this? Have you considered a midday communication method for your Live subscribers? Differences of opinion among IBD Live panelists. I personally didn't do anything yesterday. But some probably thought we might get a bounce that would last at least a little while (and if lucky, it'll last a lot longer.
what time frame are we looking at on TOS? Thanks, 5 min
MPC ???? Holding the buy zone and 21-day line, still looks strong. Earnings are right around the corner.
Was yesterday's action at all a result of shorts taking profit? I would agree, much of that must have helped w/ that rebound. But, notice how the intraday rally started quite early in the afternoon, not in the final 15 or 30 minutes. Just my thoughts. HatMan
I agree David... after losing 5% of my account since January 1, I'm 90 % in cash now. Keeping your powder dry.... smart
David Ryan's comments are pure gold live answered
Can sit out power and discipline coexist? :) :)
I use the markup tool on Marketsmith to see where I bought and sold. The best notebook you can use is the one you open and carry with you. Absolutely!
PERFECT ANSWER DAVID. From one that learned the hard way. AND still learn those lessons but not has frequently.... live answered
David Ryan has such a great perspective of the market and wealth of knowledge. I wish he joins more than one day on IBD Live. I wait for every Tuesday. All of you are great but Ryan adds a different twist to our thinking. Also Charles gives
another kind of twist :-)

It looks like GUSH is forming a cup with handle according to the chart on Marketsmith. Do you think GUSH is a good way to invest in oil or do you think it too risky since it is leveraged? Hi Christopher, since this is levered, I think that warps the handle in this base. If, for instance, a cup forms with a 20% to 30% decline, you really don't want the handle to decline more than 8%-12%.
If I remember correctly, Mark Minervini won his championship even though he tightened his stops up to 2-3%. That will definitely keep one out of a blow up. Big lesson for me, as any underperformance I have is due to not selling one or two
stocks until way too late. Slowly learning. Thanks.
Yes, had tight stops and also took quick profits. A great lesson indeed!
A terrific Tuesday morning to the IBD Live Team! Only 11 months until Christmas !!! live answered
What are your thoughts on AA at the moment? live answered
Do the two Dave's still have a position in NTR? live answered
Ali - David Ryan said 1st thing to look at is 200 SMA moving up. Then 50 Day line. Then what? We'll cut a clip and add to the FAQ page this week!
Is EPD something that makes sense to buy at this point? 7% dividend live answered
Thanks Hatman Hope you were able to master the Old Fashioned! Ha ha! Thanks for viewing my Twitter pic (@SaitoChung) I am still in Bartending 101! LOL
David, would you have sold GNRC at the top ie $524 where it was an outside day with big volume as you noted? Scott, great point, big reversals after hitting new highs in heavy volume -- key Bill O'Neil and IBD primary sell signal.
Is GNRC also showing a break of head and shoulders Good point, I can see that.
I have to admit, all these charts look the same to me Just keep practicing w/ these charts, Juan! I guarantee, you'll develop your eye. And look more at the best examples. Develop that visual memory.
Is this a Head and Shoulder pattern to short? Yes. We have stories on this in the "Short Selling" section in "Learn" at Investors.com
Can David comment on TSLA? live answered
What are David's thoughts on the following trade: Selling the February 18 $220 out-of-the-money put options on Generac with the stock at $273? Premium is $2.15. Seems that it would be very unlikely for Generac to go that low, although earnings
are before expiration.
live answered
Some suggest hoping for 3-5 years-is this ever recommended? We don't think holding and hoping is a viable long-term strategy for trading individual stocks
David R. - since February, have you shorted and or many stocks? If so, what percentage of your portfolio have your shorts represened? A recent short for him was TECL on 1/12
Hatman - Great leading questions !!! Cheers Sara, thank you!!
trying to better understand the need to wait for move up before shorting; seems that a trend and momentum down along with market is sufficient Just like we don't like buying stocks extended on the upside, it's risky to short extended to the downside.
Is that a Gessel rally on the QQQ? Yes it is!
I remember from some seminars that you reset all base counts after big corrections? What magnitude of correction do you get a full market reset for base counts? If the stock falls sharply below the low of its prior base, that's a base count reset. the Feb 2020 bear market reset the count. And for an individual stock, if it moves nowhere for at least a year, year and a half, that's a reset.
On the Marketsmith bluedot screen, there are a number of stocks where bluedot is leading. Are these buys or wait till breakouts? In a market like this, I treat them as prime "watch list" candidates. But I prefer to wait for more signs of strength.
Where do I go to find David Ryan's iPad setup for screening stocks? It was a session on IBD Live a while ago. Looks like we don't have a clip of it, but here's one we did with him almost a year ago on his stock screening tips: https://www.investors.com/videos/david-ryans-stock-screening-tips/
Thank you, David, for endorsing that classic O'Neill book on shorts! IBD, the company, completely neglects heralding and quoting from this one, which is just as valuable as his classic one on longs. It also helps one learn how to spot sell
signals when we're long!!

"Hat Man - have you sold your long term NVDA yet?
I see you are still holding TSLA. Thank you." Hi Greg! Yes, in one account I bought NVDA in both 2018 and 2020, and I am holding. I believe in the company's future prospects and think this current correction is still normal.
CF is trying to break out live answered
Too much time on Generac It's being used as a concept for handling big winners in general

Can you cover bottoming base? Any example ? AA may have put one on.
Lightning round- RIVN please. RIVN looks terrible. Needs a lot of repair work. And it needs production to ramp up! Being first to release an EV pickup won't do much good if it output/deliveries are at a trickle while Ford and GM enter that space.
During Lightening Round, thoughts re pullback of Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB)? If I believe in this stock longer term, actionable now? live answered
By the time we all get educated on shorting, the market will have reversed into an uptrend. ;) True! :)
Too much time on GNRC - put a fork in it! live answered
can you discuss GOOGL? live answered

NTR and IPI look very weak live answered
David EQNR - Still looks OK to you? Still Ok but it is a slower oil stock. It might be slow and steady.
For Market Smith Oil&Gas -Cdn Expl&Prod Industry Group would it be possible to update this list? After looking gold stocks there are many junior CDN companies within that industry group. I feel as if there are many companies that could
be added to this list such as Whitecap, Tourmaline, Peyto, Headwater, Parex, Tamarack Valley, ROK etc...etc... The ESG the companies aree doing here is pretty amazing. Looking at Barnwell Industries that is included with CNQ is a bit strange.
A Hawaii real estate developer & and an oil sands developer shouldn't be in the same industries. If the TSX or TSV stocks are not included here because of costs, understood, but it would be a boon should energy stocks continue. Canada
is only the 5th largest oil producer in the world as you know.
Good stuff, thanks Lyall
They're buying the beaten down stocks like OLPX Yep. Seeing some of those names bounce back.
or RIO? live answered
Missed first part of show. Hope UPRO was discussed. Will watch first part this afternoon when Live is posted. Yup, we did. We're watching it closely. Thanks Carl!
AXP is up 8% on a down day. It's retaking its 50 day average. Is AXP actionable? Thank you! live answered
Was yesterday a rally day? yes!
Ally should host more often. 3 days a week - plus she hosts the SMT video every afternoon!
TSLA has turned upward. May we take a look? live answered
TSLA - Since Nov, the stock has had 4 undercuts. This this latest drop and Acc/Dis C rating, shouldn't we look to trim or sell this stock on any kind of 2nd chance rebound. Of course. My line in the sand was it closing last week below the prior week's low.
Did David Ryan continue to hold his TSLA position? Thanks for insights. I don't recall him being in it. But even if he were, he wouldn't be holding it here
MSFT earnings today Yep. The MSFT-Fed-Tesla-Apple news cycle suggests a lot of big swings for the market.
Thanks Everyone......Nice work today. live answered
