Q&A Summary

Question Answer
Happy Friday! Hatman Dave, you used to play violin. Do you still keep up with it? Hi Ron! Been thinking about sawing some tunes at home this year, but just thinking so far, my friend. Luckily I haven't forgotten how to play!
Good Morning IBD Live family. Shout out to the Investing with IBD Podcast duo Justin and Irusha and Guest Charles Harris that dropped on YouTube yesterday. O'neil disciples dropping knowledge. #GOATS. Packed with great market sentiment information
and useful to enhance "M" in CAN-SLIM analysis. Thanks guys!
Thanks, Shane!! We love the podcast too! Everyone should check it out — investors.com/podcast :)
There are a few great cellists I listen to from time to time Love it
Good Morning! Thoughts on INMD- They beat on earnings last qtr, eps, sales, and raised guidance, pre announced yesterday another beat on EPS, Sales, and raised guidance (most companies are doing the opposite). Stock has not made a new low
since may 11th while market has continued to make new lows. Daily chart shows nice big blue volume bars, weekly chart nice big blue bars. Nice jump on last qtr earnings follwed by a nice calm pullback on light volume leading into yesterdays
nice big volume spike.
Nice details, Mark, thanks much. I am impressed with the company's technology and track record. It's definitely worth close watching.
Ally, re: yesterday's question, I want to ask questions anonymously but could not change screen name. Can you help? Just wondering why the feature was removed. Thanks. Hi Karuna! Did you try going into your Zoom application settings? That's where you should be able to change it. Our customer service team can help you troubleshoot if you need more help. Having names, even if an alias, helps us keep track
of whose questions we're able to answer — we don't want anyone feeling like we're ignoring them! :)
Good morning all Hi David
Good morning: Ali: There is a meeting in Boston. I cannot find in the meet up group website event.Would you tell me how can I find out the meeting? https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_I8OsAi53RmCytsjC9UF8Jw
Good morning team! Morning, David.
test We see you, Edward.
GM from Cape Cod. On the road listening in the car. No commenting if you are driving!
Morning All. Morning Tik!
Welcome to special (Friday) guest Scott :-). AZO was mentioned yesterday on Big Picture. Can you please explain why AZO (and others) show ROE and Debt as "N/A"? Hi Tom, good Q. Return on equity needs a positive shareholders equity on the denominator of the ratio. So, if you go to the 10-K filing or the balance sheet of the latest fiscal year, and you'll probably see AZO has a shareholders deficit.
So we cannot figure out an ROE when the denominator is negative! I recall in the early years since its IPO, Weight Watchers WW and Planet Fitness PLNT has the same issue.
Your January 2022 short video on the SHORT STROKE is excellent. My question is, is a short stroke always a two-week pattern or can it be a three-week pattern? Specifically, would BIIB qualify? Good to hear, Gregg. O'Neil discovered and 'penned' this pattern. It's always 2 weeks. But if you see one over 3 weeks, well, it doesn't meet the letter of the law, but does it meet the spirit of one. Pls keep in mind, the short stroke is
extremely rare. Pls check out these Investor's Corners. Cheers, DSC -- https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/smart-chart-reading-why-short-stroke-3-weeks-tight-give-a-profit-opportunity/ and https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/short-stroke-offers-secondary-buy-point/

Go long or go home as they say!! Especially when a true market bottom begins!

small banks don't have the investment banking risks of the larger banks and can be more pure play NIM plays I'd agree! Makes sense to me, too, since they don't get the "Too Big to Fail" safety net that many banks did in past crises, eh? So they have to be razor sharp with their balance sheets and income.
Ali could you please turn on the transcripts Done, thanks! :)
An interesting context behind yesterday's big, wild swing: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-13/hot-inflation-torches-bears-in-a-stock-reversal-for-the-ages?srnd=premium "An all-or-nothing market has become a feature
for 2022. The number of days, wherein more than 400 companies of the S&P 500 move in the same direction, have shown up more often than any years since at least 1997. [Yesterday…] That pattern was just on display within hours, exacting
a harsh toll on anyone who dared [trying] to time the market."
The idea of "correlation of crisis" is not something that should be ignored. Diversification just doesn't offer the protection some people think it does in such cases.
This years market action reminds me of a cage fight with the FED versus the Economy. In one corner we have the FED planning to choke the economy until it taps out (soft landing) or maybe going to far, mouthpiece coming out, Doctor being summoned
(hard landing). In the other corner we have the Markets saying to the FED, I think you are bluffing, I'm going to make you concede (Pivot) and make you pay everyone in the arena (quatitative easing and lowering interst rates). I think
I know how this ends, but I have my popcorn out.
Not a bad analogy!
Hatman - suggestion - bring your violin to IBD Live and play for us befoe the start. Ha ha, maybe someday, Leslie. First, I need to practice!
Im not at all on the break even for the year team. live answered
Im not at all on the break even for the year team. Me neither, but I'm down a lot less than the S&P 500. And I'm happy with that.
DV (sort of) gap up over DT Line Still seems to hold up well vs. other techs.
That's a great clarification about your methods, Scott. Thanks for that !! live answered
What about Inmode a fallen angel live answered
What happened to NOC? Feels like bulls and bears are in a tough battle, eh John?
Yesterday's huge reversal was surprising. Was Algorithmic trading by large institutions triggering part of it? I wouldn't be surprised if some of the puts and shorts from the last few weeks took the opportunity to lock in profits on the big drop after the CPI report. That profit taking means built in buying pressure that could have cascaded up.
For the average IBD investor would you think just preserving mental capitol and going to money market or 3mo Treasuries would be better advice- given that most everyone is expecting thinks to go lower- perhaps for months Personally, I just stick with the money market so I have the liquidity to make quick changes if I need to.
Why is the volume higher on QQQ than on NASDAQ Comp? When looking at Nasdaq Composite volume on MarketSmith, notice its says Volume (00). That means you need to multiply the scale by 100.
Caveat! Just like yesterday, three of the Nasdaq's last five intermediate lows also had bullish Doji-reversal candles. And all three of those lows didn't rise very far subsequently before rolling over to retest those lows. Therefore, I would
take swift profits on any swing trades entered yesterday. Reportedly, it was little more than a frenzy of unanticipated short covering. Time will tell if any retest has legs.
good stuff, Ira. Thanks as always for insight.
Any reason why you're not looking for blue dot breakouts? It's a bear market. More on defense right now.
Is INMD good for an early entry? It's a bottom base definitely, but I'd rather wait for some closes above the 200-day line. If it can bide some time and form another handle below the 40 level, could set the stage for a nice breakout. Note that revenue growth has been decelerating
and fund ownership has dropped quite a bit from Q4.
Good morning from Texas! Any thoughts on LPLA? live answered
Is CF falling out of the cup base? Should we wait for tightness before buying below pivot? This one trading very wide a loose within this new base. live answered
Is LW to extended to try and add some small exposure here? Not extended by traditional measures and in a defensive industry group it may do better in this environment. But defensive areas don't usually move like our market leaders, especially with market providing headwinds.
While this year has presented numberous challenges, it's provided an outstanding opportunity to understand the significance of (proper) entries and position sizing. So true, Peter.
Young/new investor here, bought first growth fund in 2020, which has currently round tripped. Considering people with long runways, does it make sense to any panelists to have a portion of a portfolio dedicated to pilot positions (1-2 shares)
to keep tabs on just how broken they can get, before trying to scale into them later? On top of having ample cash? Or does the destruction % wise cause too much of an eye sore?
Hey Andrew! We focus our pilot positions on stocks that are showing signs of outperformance rather than broken underperformers
INMD has been improving. Now EPS growth, which had been a problem, is picking up. I see 38.70 is the pivot. People might want to keep an eye on it. Fund ownership has fallen sharply since Q4. That's at least a yellow flag for me, along with decelerating revenue growth.
Energy really taking it on the chin this morning The group is still volatile, especially so in the past few months. I'm starting to wonder about the quality of the bases getting formed.
Scott is stealing Ed's TSLA thunder. Don't need to pile on and take up too much of the show. I'm happy to go into a fundamental Tesla story at some other point.
Can you please explain short interest again and what days and % mean The number of shorts is reported and we divide that by the average daily volume to show how many days of average volume it would take to cover all the shorts. The % change is the change in days from the last reporting period.
Liz Truss is speaking 2pm Eastern time That's right - time was switched.
Consumer sentiment exceeded consensus 59.8 vs 58.8 Thanks!
VIX with a "golden cross" right now I wouldn't read too much into that. The VIX doesn't really trend, it goes back and forth.
Liz Truss just replace Karteng. Sorry if covered in the news pre show Was covered.
UM Consumer Sentiment came in @ 59.8 vs 58.6 consensus. Sept final was 58.6. How does that effect the market? live answered
Thoughts on RS breaking a trendline Trying to....I'd rather wait for a decisive move above its Oct. 4 high.
also INMD - looked like a Break Out Pocket Pivot yesterday , volume higher than any down day volume in 5 months live answered
Lot of overhad supply in INMD Not to be ignored!
Ed or Ali, please clarify again... U of Michigan sentiment being good is bad for stocks going higher, correct? Yes good sentiment bad for market — we want to see signs of a weaker economy so Fed will back off on raising rates
Can you discuss UNH Yes, will do!
thanks. Just remember they pre announced earnings yesterday. Interesting that the funds haven't kept it. Indeed, thanks for the reminder
It appears to me the market charts are all showing DOWN trends all the MA's are down and inverted and considerable spread from reversing. It seems to me SQQQ is a good BUY! I would like the panel feels about this? Maybe, but we could just go sideways for a bit since we've come down so much. That could make it easier to lose on the long and short side.
Assumption: new solar buildouts for the average residence require debt, even with subsidies. The national average new buildout costs between $12,600 and $14,000. Question: in a rising interest rate environment, what is the impetus to go long
solar stocks for an O'Neil type move? Thesis: with so many pundits anticipating that the Fed will (and must) pivot from QT back to QE, won't most consumers simply prefer to wait to buildout solar under a better interest rate regime?
Maybe. Solar installer Sunrun (RUN) has crashed in the past couple of months.
SEMI's … SMH… not doing well.. We'll see how much of yesterday's gains evaporate.
Good morning! What is happening in with CF? I don't know. CF and other fertilizer plays are down hard. Not seeing any news.
'@HatMan…sorry but I'm not sure I'm buying InMode off 80%! No need to apologize, Jim, I agree that's an incredible decline! It adds another layer of complexity to the chart, eh?
how to ge real time market smith? William, not sure I understand your Q, do you mean real-time quotes? If yes, at top of the chart, if you click on the big grey gear, then you can select either delayed quotes or "Nasdaq real time reference data."
vlo Thanks!
FYI... FED TALKS TODAY: 10:00 AM ET: Kansas City Fed President Ester George speaking; 10:30 AM ET: Fed Governor Lisa Cook speaking: 12:15 PM ET Fed Gov Christopher Waller speaking Let me guess, they'll say they are serious about bringing inflation down?
looks like the consumer sentiment numbers pulled the rug Good point Andrew
DAVID -- Speaking of Banks . . . small cap . . . Gap Up on EPS +6.57% Volume +337%. Banks-West/Southwest (17/197) having a strong day. Good share, Peter! Yes, on Thu I saw these names as forming interesting patterns too: CCBG FCBC MPB BANR HFWA SPFI TCBK and FBP
Any thoughts on EHAB from anyone? Showing great institutional support but horrible RS… Seems too early right now. Fundamentals aren't there for the last couple of quarters and technical action hasn't shown strength yet.
Thanks for the discussion live answered
Hi Dave, I was watching mtb too but I read this: https://www.ctinsider.com/business/article/Blumenthal-wants-federal-regulators-to-17446859.php Appreciate the share, Linda! Good to know. Mr Blumenthal certainly is one of the financial industry watchdogs on Capitol Hill. I respect that he's doing his job. Admittedly, I haven't done significant research on MTB.
Regarding banks any interest in schw? This historically does well when rates go up. Totally right, Linda. This has been a proven winner. I believe Bill O'Neil had invested in this one big time in the late 1990s.
Are there any opportunities in Florida with all the clean-up and rebuilding efforts? I'd think the clean-up in SW Florida is a one-off event, but CLH is holding up well. WM is trying to halt its slide.
COST, has David Ryan mentioned the possibility of shorting this ? I believe he did on his last appearance. He made the point that it's rare for him to short something when he frequents the establishment but the chart just looked like it was going down.
Can you interpret VRTX action? Minervini spoke of it also but I need help understanding what it's doing last few days. live answered
Captured most of the big runup on oil from yesterday with small positions in PBF and VLO. Out now, even with OPEC oil production cuts, softening global demand and continued China COVID lockdowns weighing in again. Nice job, Andrew. Seems like short-term trading is the way to go right now.
Scott - "we are in the 3rd worst generational downtrend of my life." Briefly, what was the other besides 2006-2008 down 50% over 2 years (approx). 2001-2003. Nasdaq off 79%.
Woo hoo I started my Day trading career in April! Dad is asking, what do you project to make this year. Father, I am just treading water, not losing money… but what about your expenses? Don't worry pops I'm not… Meanwhile I managed to keep
him out of the market and bonds since Jan. 6th. But I guess its not enough to not lose money as a trader, should be some success in any market, but its been so easy to get stopped out lately. Thanks for letting me vent lol
We are here for the venting and your thoughts, Johnny! Way to go, best wishes to you! Way to rock it

What does this response mean: "IBD host would prefer to answer this question live"? In other words where do I find the answer? He's answering now. Wanted to save it for final thoughts!
DQ Really trying to bottom out after round-tripping those gains past 50. Let's see how it handles the current test of the 40-week MA.
krus Setting up a new base, I like how the stock doesn't seem to want to go any lower. But now it's likely to close 7 weeks in a row below the 10-week MA. If it reaches 9 weeks, that's an O'Neil sign of weakness.
