Former England striker Ian Wright has revealed a conversation he had with Newcastle United and Three Lions frontman Callum Wilson after England made it through to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup.
Having not been selected for the Three Lions since October 2019, Wilson has had something of a goalscoring renaissance since the start of the season after scoring six goals in just 11 league matches which was enough to land him a spot in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the tournament.
And even while being behind captain Harry Kane in the pecking order for obvious reasons and playing 45 minutes across the entire group stage, Wilson has stamped his mark on the tournament with his unselfishness.

Talking on his Wrighty's House podcast, the former Arsenal striker showered Wilson with praise after his cameo in England's 6-2 win in their group stage opener against Iran.
"I saw him the other day and told him I admire his unselfishness. He comes on in the World Cup, team is 5-1 up. You’re running through. You can score yourself but you square it and give it to Jack Grealish.
"Callum actually said to me ‘Give and you shall receive’. I hope and pray that his time is coming."
Of course, it's very unlikely Wilson will start a game for England at this tournament unless Harry Kane gets injured or suspended or Southgate moves to an unlikely two-at-the-front formation but Wright's call will certainly stick in the mind of both fans and perhaps the England staff.
