Ian Wright on pressure now facing Newcastle United having 'reached the mountain top'

Ian Wright says Newcastle United's next challenge is dealing with the pressure of being expected to win every week after they secured a top-four finish in this season's Premier League.

Eddie Howe's side guaranteed themselves Champions League football next season on Monday evening when they drew with Leicester City. Ensuring Liverpool can't catch them, Newcastle have secured their first top-four Premier League finish since 2003.

And with the Magpies backed by wealthy owners now, Wright believes that the pressure will be on for them to stay there next season, which means being expected to win every week and dividing attentions between domestic and European competitions.

Speaking on his Wrighty's House podcast, the Match of the Day pundit said: "We need to see now who they're going to buy. This has happened very quickly for them. Now, they've gone to the mountain top and nobody wants to come back down. You want to stay at the peak.

"So they're now going to have to deal with the pressure that comes with a top team that has to be winning every week. This is a new pressure and what Arsenal learned this season, Newcastle will learn next season. Chelsea obviously know how to do it, and Man Utd down the years know how to do it, City obviously. This is where it gets exciting for Newcastle."

Before thinking about the summer transfer window and strengthening for next season, Howe's side must first wrap up an excellent campaign this time around. They travel to Chelsea on Sunday for the final game of the 2022-23 campaign.
