Ian Wright full of praise for 'very impressive' Evan Ferguson after goal and assist against Everton

Ian Wright was full of praise for Evan Ferguson after the Irishman's complete performance in Brighton's 4-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening.

Appearing on BBC's Match of The Day last night, Wright singled out Ferguson for specific praise during his analysis of The Seagull's win over The Toffees on Merseyside.

The Arsenal legend, who scored 113 goals in 213 games in the Premier League, was extremely impressed with Ferguson's finishing ability, his selfless running to make space for his teammates and his willingness to get involved in a bit of 'argy-bargy' when necessary.

"I'm very, very impressed with him," began Wright, "Very good in the box, very good awareness in the box. I love this one, he just got on the back of the defender and then comes in with his left foot.

"He has a go here from 25-yards. If it's on, bam, brilliant to see from an 18-year-old.

"Uses his body there, he'll have a little rough and tumble as well. I love that, nothing wrong with that."

The second half of Tuesday's game against Everton saw Ferguson net his second goal in as many games. After delaying his run into the box, the Bettystown man ends up behind Vitaliy Mykolenko and makes no mistake with a cool side-footed finish into the top corner.

For former Arsenal and Crystal Palace striker Wright, this was perhaps the most impressive piece of play from Ferguson on the night.

"This is his goal. The way he just stays on the back of the defender. He's constantly making that space for himself.

"He's gonna go and then he stops. Then he goes again and then bam!

"People think that's just a tap in - but he's made that a tap in. He absolutely did."

It wasn't just the goal that impressed the former England attacker. Wright loved Ferguson's assist for the Solly March goal that put Brighton 3-0 in front and was effusive in his praise for the Irishman's off-the-ball running to support his teammate.

"Great play from him, great movement. He makes this goal once he plays the pass.

"Look at what he does now. Look at the space he's opened up for Solly March. Brilliant, fantastic awareness."

Safe to say Wright is a big fan of the young Irish prospect who will be looking to add to his two senior International appearances when Ireland take on Latvia and France at the Aviva Stadium in March.
