Ian Evatt's verdict on Accrington Stanley red card vs Bolton Wanderers and referee performance

Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt believes some of the bookings for both sides in the game against Accrington Stanley were 'debatable' as he admitted both teams felt hard done by with some of the calls made by the officials.

Dapo Afolayan put the hosts in front before half-time with his 14th strike of the season as Wanderers went in leading at the break.

Jay Rich-Baghuelou leveled for the visitors early in the second half before Jon Dadi Bodvarsson came off the bench to fire Wanderers back in front.

Accrington had a goal for Tommy Leigh ruled out for offside before they were reduced to 10 men after Rosaire Longelo was shown a straight red card for fouling Aaron Morley, before Bodvarsson scored his second to wrap up the three points for Wanderers.

Both teams had four players booked by referee Thomas Bramall, who also dismissed Longelo for his challenge on Morley.

Evatt did not feel there were any bad tackles in the game and admitted he was appealing for a foul initially when Morley went down under Longelo's challenge.

The Wanderers midfielder was left with a 'nasty gash' high on his leg as a result of the tackle and is evidence he was caught.

But Evatt vows he does not like seeing players being sent off but that the way the game was being officiated and bookings being regularly handed out potentially could have warranted a dismissal in the context of the encounter.

And he felt both Wanderers and the Stanley dugouts were united in their fair share of having decisions go against them, but he felt the red card did not have a big impact on the outcome of the encounter.

Evatt said: “It didn’t really feel like there was any bad tackles and myself and their bench were talking amicably for a change!

"We both felt hard done to and I think we were both appreciative of referees were making bad decisions for both of us so sometimes it happens like that and I don’t want to see players sent off, so possibly that was unfortunate.

“I was appealing for a foul because it was a foul, but I haven’t watched it back. But I’ve seen the injury on Aaron’s leg and it’s quite high and it’s a nasty gash so he’s clearly caught him.

“But I think the ref really set his stall out with the amount of cards that he was giving all game for challenges and some of the yellows were very debatable and if he’s giving yellow cards for tackles like that, then possibly that could be a red card but we haven’t had much fortune I don’t think with decisions this season.

“I’m sure every manager is the same but I’m pleased that we’ve managed to win the game. I don’t want to see players get sent off, I don’t particularly like it and maybe it was a bit harsh on them, but I think at the time we’d virtually had the game won. I think they were fatigued and our players off the bench had a real impact and impetus for us.”
