‘I would’ve preferred nothing’: Texas teacher’s ‘insulting’ 15-year service gift sparked a brutal debate about how schools value educators

A Texas teacher sparked a huge online debate after sharing that they received an umbrella as a gift for 15 years of service. The educator posted about it on Reddit’s r/MildlyInfuriating community, sharing a photo of the wrapped item with the caption, “15 years of service… so they gave me an umbrella.” The post quickly went viral, with thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments pouring in from people who clearly related to the frustration.

According to The Nerd Stash, the teacher later explained that their frustration wasn’t about expecting a big bonus or an expensive gift. It was about the lack of thought behind it. They also noted that they didn’t even know they had reached the 15-year mark until the gift was handed to them, and explicitly said they “would’ve preferred nothing” over what they saw as a low-effort token of appreciation.
