Lighting a candle to make a room feel cosier is one of the few perks of winter. There's nothing quite like letting the aromas fill up the space around you, and Yankee Candles are firm favourites between all generations. From the signature glass jars to the endless choice of delicious scents - it's no wonder people obsess over them.
One former employee at the candle brand has shared how you can make your home smell amazing for less, thanks to a little-known policy in-store. Taking to her TikTok account, @ashlester, Ashley Lester claims there's a nifty way you can get an 'entirely brand new candle for free'.
Ashley claimed that Yankee Candle has a 'jar for a jar' policy, which many people have no idea about, meaning that if you've burnt the candle to almost the bottom, you can return to the store and ask for another. The former Yankee Candle employee does caveat her advice by explaining that you'll have to say something along the lines of 'I didn't like the smell'.
She posted the hack as part of a 'company secret' series on TikTok, where people share industry tips and tricks people may not know about.
Ashley said: "You can take in your candle and get another one, exchange it out for another one, even if you've already burned it.
"This one", she said, whilst holding up a jar that had almost been burned to the bottom, "is basically all the way burned. I could take this in and just say: 'I didn't like the smell', and then they would give you an entirely brand new candle for free."
This, of course, could save you some serious money as Yankee Candles cost around £30 for a large jar. Later, Ashley added in the comment section: "I forgot the best part! You don't need a receipt to exchange it!"
Some people said that they'd feel too mean doing this trick - but then others justified it to themselves.
One wrote: "I'd feel bad doing this. But then again they did charge me $19 (£15.62) for wax."
Another said the policy is true, but there are limitations, commenting: "The policy is there if you truly didn't like it. I worked for them for 10 years. However, repeat offenders are tracked and cut off if necessary."
"I could never return that with a straight face", someone wrote, and another agreed: "I'd feel so guilty doing this."
