Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has expressed his delight at Mohamed Salah signing a new contract at the club but said he ‘didn’t believe’ the Egyptian would extend his deal.
Salah, who has scored 156 goals in 254 appearances since his £36.5m move from Roma in 2017, put pen to paper on a new three-year contract on Friday. The ECHO understands that the 30-year-old forward will earn more than £350,000 a week, making him the highest paid player in the club’s history. He only had a year left to run on his previous deal and there were doubts about whether he would stay at Anfield.

And Enrique, who made 99 appearances for the Reds across a five-year-spell, couldn’t hide his delight at the news and revealed he was pessimistic that Salah would prolong his time at the club.
The Spaniard tweeted: “Salah signs a new contract until 2025!. The best signing this summer, to be honest with you I didn’t believe it was going to happen and I’m so happy I was wrong.”
Enrique followed the tweet with a king emoji, in reference to Salah being nicknamed the ‘Egyptian King’ by Liverpool supporters.
