I waited an hour for breakfast but it was the best I've ever had

A new café in Wirral is serving breakfast, lunch and cakes from a former railway station.

The Station Master’s House is based at the Grade II listed Hadlow Road Station in Willaston which lies on the Wirral Way footpath.

The café opened earlier this year after a successful 2021 serving a variety of drinks, homemade cakes and ice cream from a converted tricycle on the station platform.

As I live close by, I frequently visited The Station Master’s House “Platform Pedaller” to pick up a coffee or hot chocolate to enjoy on my lockdown walks during the pandemic.

The drinks and cakes always left me impressed, so I’d been impatiently waiting for the café to open in January 2022.

I finally visited The Station Master’s House for the first time last weekend for breakfast and I have to say it was the best breakfast I’ve ever had.

We arrived at around 11am on Saturday morning and had to wait 10 minutes for a table which didn’t surprise me considering the outdoor seating area, which is covered with a gazebo, was completely full despite it being cold and very windy.

The café is split into three rooms which have a variety of different sized tables and cosy décor, making it the perfect place to hide away on a cold day.

Once seated at a table for two by a window overlooking the platform, we took a few minutes to decide what we wanted as the menu has a wide variety of breakfast options. It also has a great selection of lunch choices, including hot and cold sandwiches.

We ended up ordering a Flat White (£2.80), Latte (£2.90), Vegetarian Breakfast (£9.95) and the Bigger Breakfast (£12.95). The latter has the same food items as The Station Master’s normal breakfast (£9.95), but with at least two of each item. As I was super hungry, I couldn't resist it!

The Vegetarian Breakfast included vegan sausage, fried egg, roasted tomato, mushrooms, hash brown, sliced avocado, baked beans and a slice of sourdough toast.

The Bigger Breakfast included two sausages, two fried eggs, two rashers of grilled bacon, two hash browns, two pieces of black pudding, mushrooms, baked beans and three pieces of sourdough toast.

Unfortunately, due to how busy the café was, we had to wait nearly an hour for our breakfasts to arrive.

However, this was forgivable, as every item was cooked perfectly. The food wasn’t greasy at all and everything was hot which isn’t always the case with cooked breakfasts.

The Bigger Breakfast’s sausages were absolutely delicious, the sourdough was full of flavour and the hash browns were perfect - crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside.

Despite the long wait, the food exceeded our expectations. You could tell the breakfasts were made from fresh, local ingredients and it was undoubtedly the best cooked breakfast I’ve ever had at a café.

I'd give the breakfast itself 5 out of 5, but due to the long wait, I had to knock a star off!

I’d recommend booking ahead if you’re wanting to visit The Station Master’s House on a weekend. I’d planned on booking a table before our visit, but I couldn't find the information on the website or social media. I inquired while I was there and found out you can book in advance by phoning 0151 345 0910.

Dogs are welcome in two of the rooms at The Station Master’s House, as well as outside. You can also order drinks and cakes to take away.

The Station Master’s House is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm. It’s at Station House, Hadlow Road Station, Hadlow Road, Willaston, CH64 2UQ.
