'I visited the oldest McDonald's in the world - it's so retro with special menu items'

We've all stopped off at a McDonald's on a long drive or to grab a quick bite while shopping, the global franchise is well embedded into daily life and popular culture.

From the annual McDonald's Monopoly to the mouth-watering Big Mac, the fast food chain is a go-to for any hungry tummies.

Even icons have to start somewhere and the McDonald brothers opened their hamburger stand in San Bernardino way back in 1948. This is no longer serving food but one of the first restaurants is - and it's home to the famous and original recipe apple pie.

This still operating restaurant is in Downey, California, and was visited by TikToker @rnthruwonderland, real name Michelle Fonseca, who documented the whole experience.

The retro design was a hit with viewers of the TikTok (@rnthruwonderland/TikTok)
The restaurant is the oldest one still serving food but also has a museum attached (@rnthruwonderland/TikTok)

She showed the venue, known as a Red and White, which has been open since 1953 in all its neon glory.

Michelle said: "There are over 34,000 McDonald's all over the world but none can compare to the one in Downey, California.

"This location is the oldest operating McDonald's in the world. Dating back to 1953, when a McDonald's hamburger was only 15 cents.

"Be sure to check out the museum with tons of retro memorabilia. And definitely don't forget to order the fried apple pie - the only location you can get this at."

McDonald's apple pie is a popular dessert in the UK but as with many dishes the recipe is different to the original. In the UK you can grab a "a thin layer of deep-fried dough and an abundance of mouth-watering filling" for £1.19.

The US version switched from fried to baked in the 1990s, making the Downey venue the only place in America where you can get one that is still fried.

Back in the day you could grab a burger for just 15 cents with a portion of chips for another 12 cents - McDonald's even stocked loaves of bread on sale for a reasonable 20 cent.

Michelle's video shows the retro styling of the restaurant, with old mascots like Ronald McDonald and Mac Tonight, an 80s mascot who sang and had a crescent moon shaped head.

The McDonald's website says of the design: "The McDonald brothers insisted that their architect design an attention catching building that would highlight their Speedee Service System. Architect Stanley Meson design of the 'Red and White' did not disappoint.

"Feeling that the roof line was a bit too flat, Dick McDonald added arches to the building. This building design was first used in 1953 until it was replaced by the Mansard Roof design in the late 1960s."

Many commenters loved the design, with one writing: "It was and still is so colourful. Most McDonalds are just beige and sad looking."

Another, who was familiar with the location, said: "Such a charming design when down the block is another McDonald's and it's the sad minimalist ones."

In response to one user, Michelle added: "With both the public and preservationists demanding the restaurant be saved, McDonald's spent two years restoring the restaurant and reopened it."
